The Appalachia Service Project (ASP) has been the yearly mission trip for our youth. This year they will be going to Hyden, in Leslie County, Kentucky. They will be leaving On Saturday, July 24th, and returning the following Saturday, July 31st, 2010. We have three groups going this year. We are pleased to have participating with us youth and adults from Zion Baptist Church in Orange County. Al and Debbie Bliss's daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons, along with two other adults and five youth are joining us from Zion Baptist.

This year's theme is Eyes on the Prize: Racing to Serve. It comes from 1 Corinthians 9:24, "Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it." ASP gives the youth, and the adults, the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the world and in their lives. The group will stay at Hyden Elementary and be sleeping in classrooms. Each group will be assigned a home to work on according on their skills. Some will be replacing floors, replacing linoleum, building handicapped ramps, replacing siding or laying shingles. Just as important is the "relationship ministry" that our youth will experience by interacting with the Appalachian family whose home they are working on. They will return from their ASP experience with a truer heart for Christian service and come home energized and ready to give back to the church and the community. The approximate cost for this mission is $7,500.00, with $6, 117.00 in fees and the remainder is cost for transportation, food, etc. The youth have worked very hard in the past to raise the funds for this mission, but are in need of approximately $2,000 to cover all the costs. Zion Baptist are also raising money for this mission and will be contributing, however we have no idea at this point what amount they will be contributing. We are asking for your help in reaching our financial need by allowing the youth to do work on a project for you (for a donation) or for a donation through the offering plate on Sundays. Our youth are eager and ready to assist you in your household projects. Please contact Al and Debbie Bliss at 540-371-4886 for available dates. Thank you for your prayers and financial support. When you move to help those in need, God moves in you. And when you change the lives of others, they have a way of changing you! This is what ASP is about!
